SEEK MAGAZINE - VOLUME 7
2016 03 Jonghyun Japan SeeK vol.007: SHINee WORLD J PREMIUM MAGAZINE (pictorial, interview)
When did you first think of starting your career as a lyricist or writer?
It was a long time ago, so I don't remember when... … . This is my first time writing lyrics for 『JULIETTE』, which was released in Korea in 2009. I've written about it before, but that's the first time I've published it. One
What inspired you to write lyrics?
Originally, my dream was to become a composer, so the opportunity was that I was not only composing but also writing lyrics. Before he was a composer he wanted to be a Korean language teacher. So he was interested in words and writing from the beginning.
What do you consider important when writing lyrics?
Writing the right way to tell a story. If you just look at the lyrics, there are often cases where the front and back do not match. For example, I was saying honorifics, but suddenly it became half-hearted, and then I said honorifics again... … . Which one in the end? What's your relationship? I don't like lyrics that make you think. Instead, I put more emphasis on writing so that the story comes true. When I want to write something, 'how I want to express it' is next.
It's a novel way of thinking.
yes. There was a time when I dreamed of becoming a novelist.
Then my dream as a novelist came true! Please let us know how you feel about actually completing the novel.
I want to write again. I want to write poems, not just novels!
The Korean novel 『Sanhayeop』, I don't think that romanticity can be obtained by learning. Where did you find the material?
I usually write about things I like, but I really hate books and movies about dating! I don't even like romantic comedies, but the fact that my first work became a love story... … It's ironic (laughs). As for the material, I jotted down things I always liked or rewrote what I wrote like a diary. I started with the idea that I wanted to express something by writing lyrics, but from there it became a flow of making a story. 2 At first, I wrote it as lyrics, so I think it's a little different from the way I usually write books. That was fun.
If you're aiming to be a writer, you'd better write down whatever comes to mind.
of course! I like to write a lot. And it's good to take notes often. If you don't write it down, you'll forget your thoughts and feelings, so I think it's important to take notes.
Take notes, look at it later and say “What is this!” Do you sometimes?
It happens often (laughs). I tend to revisit the notes often. There are many times when I check on the plane while moving, but the memo is sometimes short and long. I recently wrote “(in Korean) Before Spring Comes,” and I thought I would add it later, so I didn’t bother writing it. And now I am completing the sentence. I'm thinking of two things for the next part, "Let's meet "one more time" before spring comes" and "Let's meet "one more time" before spring comes". “One more time” and “one more time” are just one word different, but they mean opposites. Language is fun. 3
Are you thinking about your next project?
Yes, I'm already thinking about my next project. But I think it will also be a love story (laughs). Perhaps the love story I will write will begin with a breakup.
Do you have any favorite words from what you've heard so far?
There was someone who said, "Your name sounds pretty when you pronounce it." The sound when you say "Jonghyun" is also very good. Not only did it mean that the name itself is pretty, but I felt that it was a word that reminded me of the person I am, so I was very happy. 4
Please tell us your future goals.
I'm still writing lyrics and composing, but I want to start writing again before I'm 30. But I'm not in a hurry. I want to take it slow. Writing is not something you can write easily just because you have prepared well. I don't mind doing it without thinking, so I want to decide on a concept and write a poem or a novel. I want you to enjoy it and do it slowly like a hobby. (in a small voice) Because I'm still immature... … .
Finally, what is “writing” to you?
I think writing is like a mirror. I look at the mirror habitually, but there are times when I look at it properly and there are times when I glance at it and pass by. For example, when writing a diary, even if you wrote it without realizing it at the time, you can clearly see what you are thinking and how you are thinking if you read it again later. When I write, I feel that the deep part of myself is revealed. I think that no matter who writes it, the color (of that person) comes out in the sentence, so I think it is similar to a mirror in the sense that it reflects the real self. 5
